The IMATS 2018 Deets

That I forgot to dish on. This one got put on a backburner in the midst of quitting my Pharmacy Technician job, flying back to my birth country, and finding work again as soon as I flew back (I actually was unemployed when I flew out), and my grandpa’s health scare. To quote Morton Salt: “when it rains, it pours.”

IMATS 2019 tickets will soon be available for sale, so I thought I’d finally follow up on what I wrote for this year’s show. Also, the fact it wasn’t really remarkable didn’t help bring the whole thing to the forefront of my to-do list.

I bought tickets for the 2 days that I was there and honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that my cousin bought a ticket on Day 2 of the trade show, I felt like I would have been robbed of that $65 entry fee. I did all the shopping I wanted within the span of a couple of hours on Day 1.

When it comes to events like these, I forgo taking pictures and selfies at first, mainly because I’m trying to catch the limited stock that’s available on site at the price that they’re being sold for. For this year, the deals and discounts weren’t as great as the first time I went and I had to agree with someone who commented over at Reddit that the previous years had better deals.

I definitely scored better in my first and second IMATS run. Third time, not so much.

The picture and videos were made possible by my cousin on Day 2. At that point, all I was interested in was making sure she enjoyed her second run at IMATS NY and got the stuff she wanted. I figured that I could relax, film and take pictures.

IMATS NYC MAC Booth

My cousin took this picture of me. Did I mention they had these handsome body models that got painted on during the entire trade show? 😀

Actually, I have a somewhat funny MAC story to tell you, but it’ll be for another entry. 🙂

Starting last year, the major brands seem to have realized that they could make major bank by showing up at IMATS NYC – what better way to market themselves to pros and amateurs alike than a big event where there’s bound to be at least a thousand worth of foot traffic?

Unfortunately, the presence of major makeup brands meant that the smaller, indie-esque brands would get lesser attention since people flock to what they know. Honestly, the discounts that were being handed out by the major brands were the same that Sephora or Ulta could drop during their periodic sales, provided that either store carries them.

But I know IMATS is more than just buying makeup at a discount – there were classes that were constantly going on, and as much as I wanted to sit down and watch the pros at work, there was hardly any place to sit to do so and the ones that were set up were occupied by people who wanted to rest their feet. I don’t blame them, but it’s also a bit unfair – they were set up so that people who wanted to attend could do so without tiring themselves out by standing.

Also, these lessons were quick due to time constraints – you had to be quick to pick up the lessons they were imparting or you’d be left in the dust. Is it any wonder why YouTube beauty videos exploded in popularity?

As far as what I hauled during the trade show, there wasn’t much – I bought bottles of Bioderma (they were selling for $20 a bottle, which was the cheapest they could ever get according to my cousin), Cinema Secrets (the giant ones. They are ridiculously expensive to get ahold of, but I forgot how much I bought them for), and some new, never-owned products from Belif. I was hoping that their moisturizer would be available for sale but alas, they were not (this was the main reason people flocked to the booth. You can imagine the disappointment jimmies rustled).

The rest of what I bought were re-buys or gifts for my sister, who is an eyeliner fiend (explains why we were at theBalm’s booth. They’ve done 50% off sales during the times they’ve attended). Schwing was something that she’s consistently used to the point where she would go through one bottle in less than a month.

I’m definitely attending this year again – I do like to see who’s going to be there to set up shop and my cousin wants to go too. This time, we got a girl friend tagging along for the first time and she’s slowly dipping her feet into the makeup waters.

I’m still of the optimist that maybe, juuuust maybe, next year will be different.

Until next time, stay blooming, Beautiful Blossoms!
